postheadericon Marriage Compatibilities

Marriage is a serious decision that every man and woman of mature age has to take. It is a pre-requisite to forming a family to most people and there are things to consider before a person gets married. Single people nowadays are hard-pressed to seek compatibilities in their partners. Marriage is after all, a lifetime contract, and a good marriage is a foundation of a good family.

Beauty is an overrated factor. Although this may be enough to attract a man to a woman or vice-versa, and to start their marriage going, in the long run there should be much more than that to hold them together.

Age is an important factor especially since mature, well-adjusted individuals have greater chances of having a successful marriage and family life than adolescents.

Regarding great discrepancies in ages, what may happen is that a much older husband will assume a father’s role, and a much older wife, a mother’s role towards the younger spouse. We know of many May-December couples who are very happy.

Difference in religious faith would not pose a problem if both spouses have the maturity and strength of character to make a marriage work. But because getting married is gamble enough, why take on an additional problem? Although we know of mixed marriages that are successful, this matter needs some thought and counsel. A catholic youth who contemplates marriage with one of a different religion should see a priest for enlightenment.

Intelligence, or the ability to think clearly and adjust, is an asset in any human endeavor. However, it is not necessary for a wife, for example, to know the intricacies of her husband’s profession, or vice versa. The proper amount of interest and appreciation for the partner’s work is sufficient.
Education has a bearing on marriage insofar as it reflects the promise of occupational competence and ability to adjust and develop personally.
Personal abilities like being a graceful dancer, a good dresser, or a brilliant conversationalist, do count most of the times. But a great sense of humor can do more wonders especially in the face of difficulties.

Money does not seem to bother the present generation of young people as much as it did in earlier generations. If both husband and wife work, they can earn enough money together to support the family. However, financial straits may crop up when family expenses rise.

Family background seems to be a factor in marriage. Marrying people of past generations tended to choose mates whose backgrounds are like their own. Younger people don’t seem to mind this matter at all so long as they enjoy each other’s company.

Of course, success in marriage and family life is never a sure thing. Compatibility in many aspects can only be tested during the formation of family itself after marriage. It is love that should be the ultimate factor to consider. Without it, any hope of a happy family life is doomed to crumble.
